Nursing Care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Humanization of Care for the Premature Newborn

Introduction: Given the complexity found in the NICU, it is important to highlight the need for care that goes beyond technical skills and scientific knowledge, in order to promote the well-being and safety of the newborn, aiming at healthy development. Objective: This study aims to present an integrative literature review on nursing care in the NICU, with a focus on the humanization of care for premature newborns. Method: This study is an integrative review. Results: The pursuit of comprehensive neonatal development has established humanization as an essential component of care in neonatal units. Rethinking practices and behaviors in the context of humanized care in the NICU is indispensable for the implementation of positive interventions. Among the most prominent strategies in this context, communication emerges as a central resource, while the reduction of stressful stimuli constitutes another direct and relevant measure for the newborn’s development. Conclusion: Humanized practices applied in the NICU are easily applicable, do not require high-cost resources or specialized technical training, and provide highly significant benefits to the newborn and to their developmental process.
