Complementary and alternative therapies for climacteric: challenges for nursing practice

The climacteric is characterized by changes in ovarian hormone production, described through several manifestations such as hot flashes, sleep disorders, mood changes, and alterations in body composition. In recent years, a growing trend has been observed regarding the use of complementary and alternative therapies for symptoms related to the climacteric period. The aim of this study was to id[1]entify and discuss scientific evidence on complementary and alternative therapeutic approaches in relation to the climacteric, as well as the challenges faced by nursing practice. This is an integrative and exploratory review guided by the PICo strategy, from which the following research question emerged: “What are the challenges faced by nursing in the use of complementary and alternative therapies in the care of women during the climacteric, according to the scientific evidence available in the literature?”. The study included articles published between 2019 and 2024, selected from the BVS, LILACS, and SciELO databases, using specific descriptors, and excluding duplicate, incomplete articles, theses, dissertations, and abstracts. Six studies met the eligibility criteria. The results reveal gaps in knowledge about the climacteric, both among women and nurses, leading to the underutilization of non-hormonal therapies despite their proven effectiveness in reducing symptoms. It is concluded that nursing practice in this context still faces numerous barriers, mainly the lack of technical and scientific training, the absence of institutional recognition, and the scarcity of public policies encouraging the use of complementary therapies within the Unified Health System (SUS)
