Intervalo entre diagnóstico e início do tratamento oncológico: uma análise no estado de Sergipe

Cancer, characterized by disordered cell growth, seriously affects individuals' health. Early diagnosis and prompt access to treatment are essential to improve patients' prognosis and quality of life. Identifying the duration of this process is important, as it allows for reflection on the efficiency of the healthcare system and the need for improvements. The objective of this study is to elucidate the time between diagnosis and the start of cancer treatment in the state of Sergipe. This study is a descriptive and observational research, based on the collection of secondary data provided by the Oncology Panel of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), referring to the years 2021 to September 2025. The time interval between diagnosis and the start of cancer treatment in Sergipe was evaluated. The data showed that, on average, the waiting time for the start of cancer treatment varies from less than 30 to 730 days. This wide variation can be attributed to factors such as high demand and limited capacity for care in health units. The analysis also revealed that 3,112 patients wait between 91 and 730 days to start treatment. The results indicate that there is an urgent need to improve the speed of processes and the management of available resources, with a view to ensuring faster and more effective care for cancer patients in the state.
