Abstract

The expansion of digital technologies and social media has significantly transformed communication, social interaction, and identity construction among young people. This study aims to analyze, through a narrative literature review, the impacts of social media use on the mental health of individuals aged 16 to 24. The review was conducted using databases such as SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Results indicate that excessive use is associated with anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem (KELES; MCCRAE; GREALISH, 2020; TWENGE, 2020). Social comparison also plays a key role in psychological distress (FESTINGER, 1954). However, moderate use may promote social support (VALKENBURG; PETER, 2011). The effects are multifactorial and context-dependent.
