Abstract

The consumption of dietary supplements has increased in recent decades, driven by lifestyle changes, increased life expectancy, and growing concerns about health and physical performance. However, their use often occurs indiscriminately and without professional guidance, which may pose health risks. Objective: To analyze the importance of pharmaceutical care in the use of dietary supplements, considering regulatory aspects, associated risks, and scientific evidence. Methodology: This integrative literature review was conducted using the SciELO, PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, and ScienceDirect databases, using the descriptors “pharmaceutical care” and “dietary supplements.” Articles published in the last ten years in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. Duplicate studies and those not related to the topic were excluded. Study selection involved screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, followed by descriptive data analysis. Results: A significant increase in dietary supplement consumption was observed, often without individualized assessment, and associated with self-medication, adverse events, and drug interactions. Regulatory gaps and limitations in the scientific evidence supporting health claims were also identified. Pharmaceutical interventions showed a positive impact on safety and clinical outcomes. Conclusion: Pharmaceutical care is essential to promote the rational use of dietary supplements, contributing to patient safety and risk prevention.
