Nurses’ role in the care of patients with cleft lip and palate: from primary care to rehabilitation

Cleft lip and palate are congenital malformations resulting from failures in the fusion of facial processes during the embryonic period, which may compromise functions such as sucking, swallowing, breathing, and speech, in addition to impacting psychosocial aspects and the quality of life of the child and their family. In this context, the role of nurses becomes essential in providing comprehensive patient care, from primary health care to the rehabilitation process. Objective: To describe the role of nurses in the care of patients with cleft lip and palate, encompassing primary health care through rehabilitation. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative and descriptive approach, conducted through searches in Google Scholar using controlled descriptors from DeCS and MeSH combined with Boolean operators. Initially, 107 scientific publications were identified, and 22 studies published between 2019 and 2025 were selected after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results and discussion: The results showed that nurses play a fundamental role in early identification, family guidance, promotion of safe feeding, prevention of complications, and referral to specialized services. In addition, they act in the perioperative period and rehabilitation, contributing to functional development, emotional support, and treatment adherence. Health education and qualified listening stood out as essential strategies for strengthening the bond with the family and improving quality of life. Conclusion: It is concluded that the role of nurses is indispensable, promoting comprehensive, humanized, and continuous care.
