Nursing care for patients in prone position: integrative review

The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is considered a serious global public health problem due to its high incidence and mortality. It is characterized by severe acute lung injury, intense inflammation, and respiratory failure from various causes that, when uncontrolled, lead to diffuse alveolar damage. In an attempt to control ARDS damage, the prone positioning maneuver has been used with good results in managing the progression of the pathology. This study aimed to describe, through an integrative literature review, the nursing care provided to patients undergoing the prone positioning maneuver. The review was conducted by a bibliographic survey in the MedLine, Scielo, LILACS, Scinahl, and Scopus databases. Twelve articles were selected that contained the main nursing care for patients in the prone position. From the identified care practices, it was possible to conclude that nursing plays a fundamental role in caring for patients in the prone position, including preparation, execution, and post-maneuver care.
