The lack of basic sanitation is still one of the greatest challenges faced by public policies in Brazil, especially affecting low-income populations. This study aims to analyze the perception of residents of the Capelinha neighborhood, in Conceição do Araguaia, regarding the impacts caused by the absence of basic sanitation. The specific objectives include identifying the main problems faced by the community, assessing the risks to health and the environment, investigating the population’s level of knowledge about the issue, and reflecting on possible solutions. The research adopted a quantitative approach through the application of a structured questionnaire to residents. The results indicated a scenario of collective dissatisfaction due to difficulties in access to sewage collection services, in addition to low social engagement in the search for improvements. The analysis points to the urgent need for governmental actions and greater community participation to guarantee the right to sanitation and promote fairer and more sustainable urban development. The study also highlights the role of Civil Engineering in proposing technical solutions capable of meeting the basic infrastructure needs of these areas.
