Abstract

This work analyzes how solid waste management in schools is linked to public health risks related to exposure to heavy metals. Great examples are lead, cadmium, mercury, and chromium, which accumulate mainly in classroom dust. Institutional gaps, inadequate infrastructure, lack of environmental education, and the absence of effective policies were also found. The review highlights that it is essential to adopt sustainable strategies, such as environmental education, reverse logistics, and waste separation, to minimize risks such as exposure that is linked to neurological damage, intestinal microbiota dysfunction, and genotoxic hazards. Promoting the creation of safer and healthier school environments.
