Physiotherapeutic Approach for Functional Recovery in Individuals Undergoing Orthognathic Surgery

Abstract

Orthognathic surgery is widely used in the treatment of dentofacial discrepancies, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits. However, the postoperative period presents challenges such as edema, pain, trismus, and paresthesia, which may compromise recovery. This systematic review aimed to analyze the literature published between 2019 and 2025, in Portuguese and English, available in PubMed, Medline, and BVS Saúde, regarding the physiotherapeutic approach for functional recovery in individuals undergoing orthognathic surgery. Randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and observational studies addressing physiotherapeutic interventions in the postoperative period were included. The findings demonstrated that techniques such as photobiomodulation, kinesio taping, cryotherapy, early mandibular exercises, and myofunctional therapy had a positive impact on reducing complications and accelerating functional recovery. It is concluded that physiotherapy is an essential component of postoperative rehabilitation, and its integration into multidisciplinary care, guided by evidence-based protocols, is crucial to optimize recovery and ensure functional discharge of patients.
