Challenges in the Implementation of the Systematization of Nursing Care (SNC) in Small Public Hospitals of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS)

The Nursing Care Systematization (NCS) is an essential tool for organizing healthcare, contributing to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care in a structured manner. This study aimed to analyze the main challenges related to the implementation of NCS in small public hospitals linked to the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and its impacts on healthcare quality. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative and descriptive approach, based on scientific publications available in the SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases. The results showed that factors such as shortage of human resources, work overload, insufficient professional training, lack of institutional protocols, and weak managerial support hinder the effective implementation of NCS in healthcare services. Furthermore, the inadequate implementation of systematized nursing care compromises continuity of care, reduces nurses’ professional autonomy, and weakens patient safety due to insufficient nursing records and disorganization of care practices. The study also identified that strategies such as continuing education, standardization of care instruments, strengthening management, and improving working conditions may contribute to the successful implementation of NCS. It is concluded that nursing care systematization is indispensable for improving healthcare quality, strengthening professional nursing practice, and promoting safer, more humanized, and efficient care in small public hospitals.
