The role of nurses in identifying and assisting women victims of domestic violence in basic health units

Introduction: Domestic violence against women is a serious social and public health problem, with physical, psychological, sexual, reproductive and social repercussions. In Primary Health Care, Basic Health Units occupy a strategic position for early identification, welcoming care, mandatory notification and safe referral of women experiencing violence, with nurses playing a central role in this process. Objective: To analyze the role of nurses and the main challenges involved in identifying and assisting women victims of domestic violence in Basic Health Units. Materials and Method: This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative and analytical approach, carried out in SciELO, LILACS, BDENF and PubMed/MEDLINE databases, complemented by Google Scholar. Articles published between 2015 and 2025 in Portuguese, English and Spanish were included, as well as official documents relevant to the topic. The final sample consisted of 10 studies, examined through content analysis, critically appraised using Joanna Briggs Institute tools and organized into three thematic axes. Results: Educational, institutional and subjective barriers were identified, including insufficient training, weak protocols, insecurity regarding mandatory notification, fear of retaliation, lack of privacy and fragmentation of the intersectoral network. Scientific Contribution: The study synthesizes recent evidence and provides support for continuing education, welcoming protocols, notification flows and intersectoral care. Conclusion: Nursing practice is essential, but it depends on continuing education, institutional support and an effective network to reduce invisibility and revictimization of women.
