Abstract

Objective: To analyze the contributions of health education practices in prenatal care, with emphasis on adherence to follow-up, maternal knowledge, the relationship with health care teams, and outcomes related to gestational care. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. Searches were performed in PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar, in addition to a complementary manual search of the references of selected studies. DeCS/MeSH descriptors related to prenatal care, health education, and primary health care were used. Original full-text studies published between 2021 and 2025 in Portuguese, English, or Spanish that addressed educational practices related to prenatal care were included. Reviews, editorials, dissertations, theses, duplicate publications, and articles not directly related to the guiding question were excluded. Results: A total of 320 records were identified. After duplicate removal, title and abstract screening, and full-text reading, 15 studies were included. The evidence indicated a positive association between structured educational practices and greater adherence to prenatal care, increased maternal knowledge, recognition of obstetric warning signs, strengthened maternal autonomy, and improved relationship with health care teams. Interventions using educational technologies, targeted counseling, group activities, and specific thematic education showed favorable effects on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Conclusion: Health education in prenatal care is a feasible, low-cost strategy with high potential to improve care quality in Primary Health Care, favoring adherence, autonomy, humanized care, and better maternal and child health outcomes.
