The Deception of the Part and the Neurotic Invention of the Drive

The drive first becomes thinkable within psychoanalysis through neurotic coordinates - mediated by the grammar of demand. Starting from this Lacanian hypothesis, this article investigates the status of partiality in psychoanalysis and traces the manner in which the radicalization of the partial object itself gives rise to regions of impasse within drive theory. We argue that, by displacing partiality from an “ontology of the part” to the differential functioning of the signifying chain, Lacan not only transforms the status of the drive object, but also reopens the question of the very conditions under which an object can operate as remainder and cause. Drawing on the formula of the drive as ($◊D) in the Graph of Desire, we show how neurosis can be reread as a structure of perseveration of demand - that is, as a signifying machinery that sustains the circulation of desire by maintaining the partial object in a position of permanent relaunching of the chain. In contrast, we propose that melancholia makes visible the point at which this economy begins to fail: the object reappears as the compact presence of the Thing. Melancholia thus reveals a particularly unstable region within Lacanian drive theory, in which not only the structural conditions for the extraction of the object begin to vacillate, but also the very distance that sustained the distinction between the subject and the cause of its desire - a distinction that Lacanian theory nevertheless continues to inscribe in terms of the object.
