The Role of the Nurse in Suicidal Behavior and Self-Harm in Childhood and Adolescence

Adolescence is a stage of human development marked by intense physical, emotional, and social changes, which may increase vulnerability to psychological distress. In this context, self-harm and suicidal behavior among adolescents constitute important public health issues, requiring special attention from healthcare professionals, especially those working in Mental Health Nursing. This study aimed to analyze the role of nurses in the care, support, and prevention of suicidal behavior and self-harm during adolescence, as well as to discuss the risk factors associated with these behaviors. This is a bibliographic study based on the critical analysis of books, scientific articles, and official documents from national and international organizations, such as the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, and the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The literature review showed that factors such as family conflicts, emotional neglect, violence, bullying, mental disorders, social isolation, and psychoactive substance use are strongly associated with self-harming behaviors and suicidal ideation among adolescents. The results indicate that self-harm, especially non-suicidal self-injury, should be understood as a form of emotional suffering expression rather than merely an impulsive behavior or a call for attention. Furthermore, self-harm may represent an important risk marker for the development of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, reinforcing the need for early interventions. In this scenario, nursing plays a fundamental role in identifying warning signs, providing humanized care, and promoting mental health. Qualified listening, empathy, strengthening the therapeutic bond, and providing guidance to family members are essential strategies in caring for adolescents experiencing psychological distress. It is concluded that the qualified and sensitive performance of the nursing team, combined with effective public policies and interdisciplinary action, is indispensable for preventing self-harm and suicidal behavior during adolescence.
