Abstract

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has promoted the development of technologies capable of collecting and processing information in real time. In this context, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have become fundamental tools for the interconnection of smart devices. These networks allow the monitoring of physical and environmental variables through distributed sensor nodes that communicate wirelessly, facilitating process automation in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, industry, transportation, and smart cities. This article presents a bibliographic review of the evolution, operation, applications, challenges, and trends of WSN integrated with IoT. Recent studies related to communication protocols, energy efficiency, security, scalability, and emerging technologies were analyzed. The results show that WSN are essential components of IoT ecosystems due to their adaptability, low energy consumption, and ease of implementation. However, important challenges remain regarding data security, energy autonomy, interoperability, and efficient information management. Finally, it is concluded that technologies such as artificial intelligence, edge computing, and 5G networks will improve the performance and efficiency of these networks in future IoT applications.
