Musical perception and production in English Language acquisition: report of experiences with adult students

This article aims to describe the first experiences reported by Brazilian students in the process of learning English using musical input as a way of accessing L2 phonology. This is a qualitative, descriptive experience report, developed based on observations reported by students participating in practical activities involving music and English phonology in a university extension project, as well as observations by the project coordinator and scholarship holders. The results show that making music was an element of motivation and overcoming among adult students who often found themselves incapable and without a “gift” for music. At the same time, observations throughout the project meetings demonstrate that it is necessary to have a more consistent approach to the use of music in the language classroom, especially in the L2 classes, in order to reach the potential of this art form beyond the playful and the mere analysis and translation of song lyrics.
